For the occasional use, a filter sock can clear up the aquarium of all those annoying particulates.  This is a great method to use the night before a photo session, for example, or the day before you'll have company over. Some hobbyists run them full time to eliminate microbubbles, and have to change them out often.

Rinse before use. Filter socks are designed to be used inside a sump or refugium with a mounting bracket or hanging mechanism. Simply place filter sock in path of drain water. Allow water that enters the sump to fall directly into filter sock. Keep the plastic filter sock ring below the top edge of your sump to prevent overflow when filter sock reaches capacity.

Filter socks are reusable. Turn sock inside-out and thoroughly rinse with a garden hose. For best results use a high-pressure water nozzle. Rinsing should be performed when filter sock turns brown or when water overflows. Frequent rinsing helps to achieve optimal water quality. The longer you wait, the more likely you'll have nitrate or phosphate levels rising since the dirty sock is present in the system, leaching out waste over time. I'd recommend changing them every three days, and have enough of these so you can clean a bunch of them at a time once a month.
